Learning Task 1: Activity 2: “My Internship Journey So Far”
Task:
Interview a peer Pre-Service Teacher and let him/ her describe the phases of internship (e.g., observation, participation, assisted teaching, independent teaching).
Peer Pre-Service Teacher: Ms. Jhendy Amad - BSED ENGLISH
Her response:
"If I were to describe my teaching internship phases, I must say it was chaotic but fulfilling at the same time. Chaotic because, since I was working with Grade 7 learners, I can't deny that the students are more hyperactive and super playful; plus, there are some who are naughty and hardheaded. It was fulfilling, though, in a way because I used to look forward to this internship back when I was in my freshman to third year. I always said, "Dugaya nako ma intern oy," and now it was finally my turn. From my first day of observing, I learned that if teachers establish authority in the classroom, the class goes smoothly and flows according to their plans. On the other hand, student engagement was split 50/50. There were students who participated actively and involved themselves in teacher-student interactions. However, there were also shy students. I noticed that even if they knew the answer, they remained silent. For my assisted teaching, I only facilitated examinations. My cooperating teacher gave the general instructions and then left me with the students to manage the rest of the class. For my independent teaching. It was an unusual feeling, even though it wasn't my first time teaching. I can say that students seemed intimidated by my looks because I stay serious in class to keep them behaved. On the other hand, the most challenging phase so far has been encouraging participation. Maybe they felt overwhelmed, just like me, which could be why they didn't participate well. Sometimes I think, "What if they still don't participate in my upcoming demonstrations?" But I always look on the bright side of every situation—we can work on this, and perhaps as days go by, I will earn their full participation in class."
